Earn Online Cash By Blogging

It seems like there are many people today who would like to earn cash online by blogging. There are several different ways to earn money online by using blogging and I’ll cover a few of them here today.

First, let’s be clear about this: blogging to make money isn’t a simple exercise. Like any entrepreneurial effort it will require work and dedication. Blogging is not an instant money machine but something that can build a part-time income online or, with enough time and work, a full time online income.

Most bloggers earn online cash by selling advertising space or by building a brand. Both methods work but I’ve found that the advertising model provides more income right away and is more doable by more people than brand building blogging.

When selling advertising space on your blog there are several different ways to do this. You can join an advertising program like Google Adsense where you get paid when a visitor clicks on an advertisement. You can join an affiliate program like the eBay Partner Network or Commission Junction and get paid when someone who clicks your ads buys a product. You can sell ad space directly yourself or through a brokerage service. Most of these advertising methods are easy to manage and more or less automatic, with the exception of selling ads yourself.

You should be wary of selling advertising space that isn’t really advertising but an attempt to purchase the PageRank value of your site. These are often disguised as paid link exchanges or paid reviews. Avoid these offers because they can cause you to lose your all important Google ranking. In fact, all advertising should use the rel=’nofollow’ link attribute in order to avoid problems. The only exception would be for a product of your own that you’re selling on another site or a product that you otherwise has a direct stake in and not a mere affiliate relationship.

Building a blogging brand to earn cash online is possible and, if you’ve been around blogging long enough, you’ll encounter these popular blogs. These blogs build a brand name around the owner, for example John Chow or Shoemoney, or a particular niche, like TechCrunch or Gizmodo. The problem for the average person is that it is difficult to build this level of popularity quickly and it can actually cost a lot of money to do so. I don’t want to necessarily discourage your hopes of doing this but I think that you’ll find it better to build a blog geared around making cash selling advertising in a niche you know well before taking on a branded blog. Learn the basics and then you’ll be prepared to earn cash online blogging.

Interesting, personally I blog for the fun of it, even though it didn’t start out that way, and any money I make on the side is a bonus. It surprises me that so many people put so much emphasis on PR when there are so many cases where sites that have some PR don’t actually reflect their true worth. As far as an advertiser is concerned, you would think they would prefer a blog with a low PR and a high amount of traffic over a blog with a higher PR and a lower amount of traffic.

Hi Sire,

There are many reasons to blog and making money is only one of them. My original website wasn’t intended to make money but to exhibit my guitar collection and to share information about programming. Out and out making money as the primary motive came later in the process.

As for PR, a lot of advertisers get caught up on it. Some though have figured out that the relationship between PR and traffic is tenuous.
