Your point rings true, Frank. I can’t tell you how many times I google something and come up with these ugly sites on the first search page. It makes me wonder if google is really doing it’s job. I guess the people with those sites know their seo.

The irony is that most aesthetic sites don’t do that well from a user friendly point of view. Keeping it simple seems to work well for Google and Drudge Report.

Hi Denise,

It would be difficult for the algorithms to determine exactly where the navigation was placed, the sidebar or the footer without doing some complex parsing of the stylesheet. All that really matters for SEO purposes is that it’s after the main content.

I’m glad you like the themes I’ve done. Maybe I can get the new one out in a few weeks. I’ve got a pretty busy schedule right now though.

Hi Eunice, It really depends on the goal of your blog. If you want a flagship blog then a pretty design is a good idea. (Your blog looks nice, BTW.) But, if you're mainly going for targeted search traffic, which is what you want to do for an Adsense site, you want to keep it plain. That's why, I'm keeping this site a bit on the plain side and targeted around particular keywords for that reason as compared to my other main site OpTempo.

Very good points Frank! You want people who come to your site to make you money not hang out all day and do nothing. Ugly sites that are monetized fully will make more money than pretty sites trying to be user friendly.

Frank, You have some great points here on how to have a niche blog. I already use your dateless mini site themes for a couple of my blog designs. I am also using your memo theme for another blog design. I have yet to see another blog design even close to this. I like the memo the best.

You make a great point about having all the navigation at the bottom of the page. I am curious as to how Google thinks of this or even if it matters? Maybe it doesn’t make a difference since your page rank has made record leaps.
